What is a Yoga Posture

Yoga Posture (asana) is to be seated in a position which is firm but relaxed

Asana means two things: the place where the yogi sites, and the manner by which he sites there. With regard to the 1st position the Hindu Holy Book Gita says that “The place where he sits should be firm, neither too high nor too low, and situated in a clean spot”

Such were the traditional requirements but any convenient, steady seat will do

The most famous Yoga Posture or asana is the so-called Yoga lotus posture, in which the yogi sits cross legged, with the feet drawn to rest against the tops of the thighs, there are many others, requiring even greater flexibility of the limbs. All that really matters is to take up a position in which one can sit absolutely still and erect, holding up the chest, neck and head in straight position, but without any sort of strain, so that one can forget the body altogether. This is by no means easy at first, elderly beginners may find it best to sit up right on a chair but it is better to sit on a ground.

The value of holding the body erect must be apparent even to those who have never tried mediation. It is a matter of common experience that one thinks more clearly in that position than when is sitting with a bent back that is why for the yogi the erect position is very necessary.

When the mind becomes deeply absorbed, a spiritual current is felt to rise trough the spine, and the passage f this current must be kept straight and open.
